This is the second of a series of posts on moving to and living in London. Feel free to read the other posts here.
Opening a bank account in London was quite a new experience for me. Unlike in India, you actually need to book an appointment (for an hour) to open your bank account. However, if you walk into a branch which is usually less frequented, or are really lucky, you can open the account on the same day. During peak times, the wait times range from 1-2 weeks.
You are required to provide your proof of residence as well as the residence permit (usually your passport and visa) during this appointment. The rest of the process is extremely mechanical with a lot of form filling and signing the documents.
Some advice for prospective applicants:
- Always ask the debit/credit card to be delivered to the branch and collect it from there (My card was shipped to my permanent address in India, inspite of my explicit instruction, and lack of common sense from the bank)
- Check and double check with the bank regarding the status of your application and the cards
P.S: Your card can be collected from the bank. But its PIN will delivered top your address, so be sure to follow that up well.
